Purpose of Position

Applies coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces, trimmings, and fixtures of buildings and other structures.

 

Essential Functions

Reads work order or receives instructions from supervisor.

Smoothes surfaces and removes old paint from surfaces to prepare surfaces for painting (wall or furniture).

Prepares drywall through taping, bedding, and/or plaster.

Fills nail holes, cracks, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other filler.

Compares color of paints, or mixes required portions of pigment, oil, and thinning and drying substances to prepare paint that matches specified colors.

Removes fixtures such as pictures and electric switch covers from walls prior to painting.

Spreads drop cloths over floors and room furnishings, and covers surfaces such as baseboards, doorframes, and windows with masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.

Paints surfaces with brushes, spray gun, or paint rollers and maintains all equipment clean.

Erects scaffolding or sets up ladders to perform tasks above ground level.

Washes surfaces prior to painting with mildew remover.

Sprays lacquer or thinner material over finished coats to blend in spots and eliminate halo around repair.

Paints/sands chipped spots on interior and exterior walls, furniture, door and window frames, and wall trimmings.

Assists with stencil marking or word bar signs.

Washes Sun Bowl Turf to help remove temporary logos and outlines athletic grass fields with a power washer.

Removes graffiti.

Outlines parking lots, crosswalks and curbs.

Moves furniture when required to perform job.

Must be available on an “On Call” basis.

Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and able to learn and use institutional software systems.

Complies with all State and University policies.

Other duties may be assigned.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one month of experience, related to the statement of duties and responsibilities; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

The employee must frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.  May be required to use Personal Protective Equipment to include:  Non-slippery/steel toe shoes, dust mask, goggles, plastic or leather gloves, hardhat, back belt, and have the ability to be trained to use a respirator mask.
