Purpose of Position

The Medical Professions Institute (MPI) Director is the program and administrative leader for the institute and serves as a key member of the College of Science (CoS) leadership team. Working collaboratively to advance the MPI program, the Director will represent CoS within the University and among a wide range of external constituencies. The Director will continue to promote UTEP’s highly acclaimed access and excellence mission by integrating MPI programming into student learning experiences, strengthening existing MPI activities and building on MPI’s institutional and statewide networks.   The preferred candidate will be a team player, resourceful, a self-starter with an eye for detail, strong interpersonal skills, and excellent organizational skills. In addition he/she will have the ability to establish priorities, to complete projects on time and within budget, and to organize, coordinate and complete a wide range of concurrent activities.

Essential Functions

Advises and prepares students for medical, dental, optometry, pharmacy, physician assistant and veterinary school.

Assists students with opportunities including, but not limited to internships, interview preparation, personal statements and essay writing.

Provide letters of evaluation for students’ professional school applications and manage programs (i.e., JAMP (Joint Admissions Medical Program), EMSAP (Early Medical School Admissions Program) and EMSSP (Early Medical School Selectin Program).

Supports MPI activities that will expand to early clinical experiences, competency-based assessments, intensive MCAT preparation and community engagement.

Addresses the needs of UTEP pre-health professional students to meet the demands of matriculation into professional school, completion of professional school, and successful acquisition of their chosen careers.

Meet with a newly formed External and Internal Advisory Boards on a quarterly basis to identify best practices in the medical professional field.

Collaborate with university departments, programs, projects, local and state school systems, and/or community organizations to consolidate resources and enhance MPI programming.

Be responsible for development efforts in support of the goals of MPI, with external partners as well as alumni, donors and fundraising activities.

Required Qualifications

-Bachelor’s Degree

-Five years of related experience and/or training to the essential duties and responsibilities; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Occasional traveling required.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree

Five years of related experience in student matriculation into Health Professional Schools.

Excellent presentation, writing, and collaboration skills.

Proven experience in grant writing and grant development.

Experience in program development and assessment.

Strong conceptual thinking and problem-solving skills.

Demonstrated ability to work independently.

Experience with public speaking, developing and facilitating outreach.

Advanced knowledge and understanding of the admissions and recruitment process in a Higher Education setting.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

Knowledge of requirements for admission to medical professions programs.
