El Paso County is a highly livable, bicultural community of almost 700,000 people that offers affordable homes and is the safest large city in the United States. Shielded by mountains on three sides, El Paso enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine annually and a dry climate, making it possible to engage in outdoor activities year-round. The city of El Paso adjoins both the state of New Mexico and the country of Mexico, making it one of the largest international communities in the world. El Paso comprises 248 square miles and is the sixth largest city in Texas and 19th largest in the United States.
The University of Texas at El Paso is seeking a faculty member at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor (tenure-track/tenured) in the area of aging research. The candidate’s current and future research focus may include genetic, biological, clinical, behavioral, social, and/or economic research aimed at better understanding the aging process, as well as diseases, conditions, and other problems or needs associated with growing older.
RESPONSIBILITIES include: 1) teach and mentor at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; 2) maintain an active research agenda; 3) secure extramural funding; 4) serve on departmental and university committees; 5) demonstrate a commitment to collaborative interdisciplinary research; and 6) work with stakeholders in the health, environmental, and social sectors. The academic home will be in the School of Nursing with potential adjunct appointments in the College of Health Sciences and/or School of Pharmacy, depending on the individual’s training, teaching capacity, and research interests. Collaboration across departments and colleges and with interdisciplinary research centers on campus will be expected.
1) An earned doctorate in an appropriate field of science, nursing, health science, pharmacy, social science, or related area; 2) a record of scholarship and experience to qualify for the rank of either Assistant Professor or Associate Professor; 3) evidence of aging-related research; 4) demonstrated ability to effectively teach and mentor students; and 5) demonstrated potential for obtaining funding through grants and contracts. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and community members from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Minimum qualifications for appointment at the rank of associate professor include an extensive and continuing body of research published in peer-reviewed scholarly journals.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Collaborative research record. Interest in working in multicultural settings.
APPOINTMENT DATE, SALARY, AND BENEFITS: Anticipated appointment date is fall 2018. Salary will be competitive for rank and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position comes with an attractive start-up package and excellent fringe benefits.
